In this module, students will be exposed to current geopolitical tensions with a country by country approach, their roots, complexities, and potential ramifications of present global tensions and potential outcomes. They will discover the major characteristics of the main geopolitical actors, understanding their defining traits and roles. Through the lectures students will familiarize themselves with selected countries, their history and their present assets and liabilities. Through presentations in the discussion section they will explore the geopolitical present (current events) and the geopolitical future (inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations’ projects). They will scrutinize recent (last ten years) geopolitical scholarship by reading two books, selected by the module leader.

This multifaceted approach empowers students to comprehend the intricate web of international relations, fostering a deep understanding of geopolitical dynamics both past and future.

On completion of this module, the student should be able to:

  1. Critically engage with the geopolitical present via investigation of: current events in global politics and business; international organizations’ projects,
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the history, characteristics, assets and liabilities of the world’s main geopolitical actors,
  3. Analyse recently published geopolitical scholarship.
  4. Relate scholarship reading to geopolitical knowledge acquired in the classroom
