Aims and Summary

The aim of this module is to help students improve their English and develop their ability to use it with confidence so that they can function competently in an academic and business environment. The module will introduce students to academic writing for business, and improve capacity to produce written academic discourse. There will be consolidation of basic writing skills, this will be used as a foundation on which students will build greater competence in approaching different tasks. In addition, students will practise effective writing process; planning and the organisation and logical sequencing of ideas. The module will also develop student awareness of style and the degrees of formality as they are expressed through language. (Ref: Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) B2;

Intended Module Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, the student should be able to:

  1. Communicate (voice or writing) in a business environment.
  2. Understand and summarise a document from the British press (print/video).
  3. Deliver an oral presentation based on a written document or listening.
  4. Write a structured and comprehensible short essay.
